The California Institute for Peruvian Studies was established in 1985 for the purpose of the study, documentation, and preservation of Peru's cultural resources. Over the last thirty years, CIPS' documentation and preservation mission has focused on archaeological sites and artifacts, which are under significant threat of destruction. The Institute has been especially active working on sites in coastal areas of Peru, in both the north and the south. The Institute's research projects have concentrated on Peru's prehistoric archaeological cultures, but the colonial and recent periods of Peru's history have also been included in regional multi-disciplinary research. The Institute's goals have also included the hands-on archaeological training of U.S., Peruvian, and other university students. CIPS project participants have contributed a significant body of reports and publications, and CIPS maintains an archive on the campus of California State University, Stanislaus where reports, publications, field notes, and photographs generated by CIPS projects are curated.
